action taken against nuisance bikers

29 November 2007

Nuisance bikers have been targeted in a multi-agency day of action on the Thorpe Edge estate, held in November.

Officers from the Bradford North East Neighbourhood Policing Team joined BCHT’s North Bradford area housing staff to issue warning letters and notices to eleven residents known to have used mini motorbikes, quad bikes and off road motorbikes illegally on roads and public spaces in the area.

Of these, five residents were served with section 59 notices by police. Under the notice if a person uses his/her motorbike illegally again they face a hefty fine or confiscation of their bike.

All eleven addresses received letters from housing trust officers highlighting the noise nuisance caused by the illegal use of the motorbikes and the danger they were to other people. Five BCHT tenants received letters warning them that the use of their bikes was in breach of their tenancy agreement.

Police on motorbikes and officers from the Council’s Park Ranger Service also patrolled the Thorpe Edge area as part of the day of action.

Anna Fryer, Acting BCHT Director for the North Bradford area said: “Customer feedback from a recent consultation we carried out of all our tenants shows that motorbike nuisance is a major concern in parts of North Bradford.

“By working in partnership with the Police and the Park Ranger Service we are getting tough on those individuals that cause problems and disturbance for the law-abiding majority.

“The day of action was a big success and we aim to work with our partners to target other areas where this nuisance is a problem within communities.

“BCHT is committed to tackling all forms of anti-social behaviour and, where necessary, take the appropriate enforcement action to protect the rights of all residents to live in safe and peaceful neighbourhoods.”

Sergeant Gibson from West Yorkshire Police said: “West Yorkshire Police is aware of the situation and fully support the action. We run regular motorcycle operations and would urge the public to report the people responsible so we can take positive action.”
