Elderly tenants at a Baildon sheltered scheme have welcomed a package of home improvements made by their landlord, Shipley Community Housing Trust.
At Greenbank Court, 11 bathroom adaptations have been designed and completed by the Trust following requests by tenants to the Council’s Occupational Therapy Unit.
The schemes have included removing baths and wash basins and replacing them with walk-in showers and easy to use hand wash basins. Grab rails, shower seats, new flooring and improved lighting have also been fitted.
In each case, Bradford Community Housing Trust’s Disabled Persons Housing Service has worked closely with tenants to make sure their individual needs have been fully met.
The improvements have been carried out by Business Development Services – part of the BCHT Group – who carry out many of the adaptation schemes for the Trust.
Greenbank Court resident Mrs Beryl Roberts, who suffers from arthritis, is delighted with the changes made to her bathroom.
She said: “It’s been getting more difficult getting in and out of the bath using my electric chair but the walk-in shower and seat is a real improvement. The Trust has done a lovely job and it’s made using the bathroom a lot easier.”
Wilf and Barbara Cowley have also seen the benefits of the work. Wilf said: “The new shower’s great and having a hand rail and easy to use wash basin has made a big difference. The workmen have also fitted new tiling and lights and decorated the bathroom.”
Dewi Williams, Shipley Community Housing Trust’s Supported Care Manager said: “Following a number of requests from tenants at Greenbank Court it made sense to carry out the adaptations and improvements together for the benefit of residents.
“It means our tenants can enjoy their independence and a better quality of living in their own homes. It shows as a caring and responsible organisation that we are listening and responding to our customers needs.
“It is a good example of how the housing trust and Bradford Council is working together to improve the lives of those residents who have access and mobility difficulties.
Coun Martin Smith, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Social Care, Adults and Health, said: “This package of work again shows how effectively we can work together.
“The adaptations will really improve the quality of life and independence of residents in this complex.”
Greenbank Court, which includes 31 self-contained flats, is due to be fully refurbished within the next two years as part of Shipley Community Housing Trust’s commitment to modernising all its sheltered housing accommodation.
During 2006/7, BCHT’s Disabled Persons Housing Service will carry out over 300 major adaptations across the district. The Service works closely with the Council’s Occupational Therapy Unit who carry out full assessments and make recommendations on each clients needs.
