Housing Trust launches parenting classes
19 February 2008
Trained staff from BCHT are launching positive parenting courses to help families build strong and caring relationships in the home.
Altaf Khan and Mo Ali from the Trust’s About Turn team will run the six-week courses which will look at developing effective parenting skills, creating positive learning environments with children, resolving child behaviour problems and building good parent-child communications.
The course will be based on the Triple P ‘Positive Parenting Program’ developed by the training body, Triple P Network.
The first course starts on Thursday, 6 March and will take place at BCHT’s City House office. It involves participants attending once a week for two to three hours and involves interactive learning and workshops.
Any parents of children up to the age of 16 living in BCHT homes who would like more information or wish to apply to go on the free course should ring 01274 254716 or 254387. There are still places available for the March course and a second course is planned for April.
Altaf Khan, Housing Manager said: “Building strong and positive relationships between parents and children are the very foundations of good family life. Good parenting promotes a child’s development and encourages good behaviour.
“The course is a valuable development of the Trust’s work to build string relationships in the home and contribute to building cohesive communities. It also shows our support for the Government’s Respect agenda.
“We would urge any tenants who feel they would benefit from the parenting course to get in touch with us and we will send out an application form and more details.”
The course is the latest development of BCHT’s About Turn project which helps tenants having difficulty maintaining their tenancy. The project, which has supported more than 70 families in three years, won a top National Housing Federation award in 2006.
