police set up ‘home' in estate flat

11 December 2006

A police base has been set up in a converted flat to help build closer links with local residents.

The new ‘home’ at Crag Road in Windhill acts as a base for PCs and Police Community Support Officers and aims to provide a reassuring presence on the doorstep for residents. People will be able to raise issues or report incidents to officers there.

Council neighbourhood wardens will be joining them at the flat. A Council Clean Team will also operate some of the time from the base.

Shipley Community Housing Trust (CHT) provided the accommodation to the neighbourhood policing team rent-free for 12 months to get the project going.

The new base was officially opened on Monday, 11 December (11am) by Chief Superintendent Simon Willsher from the Keighley Division of West Yorkshire Police.

It is hoped the base will also be used to hold local residents meetings and Councillor surgeries and help towards generating a greater sense of community in Windhill.

It will include crime reduction and personal safety literature as well as a lap top, phone line and access to other services.

Dewi Williams, Shipley Community Housing Trust’s Supported Care Manager said: “We are delighted to link up with the Police and Bradford Council and provide this community resource in the Windhill area.

“Through partnership working, Shipley CHT, the Police and the Council are making great strides in tackling crime and nuisance behaviour in Shipley and this neighbourhood base is an important next step.

Inspector Owen West of the Neighbourhood Policing Team in Shipley said: “The new facility will provide residents with a police presence on their doorstep and make them feel more confident about raising any problems.

“It will provide a base for our team of officers and neighbourhood wardens who will work side by side with the housing trust and the Council. It will in turn provide an opportunity to share information and best practice between each of the agencies.

“We are determined to have a firm presence in Windhill to tackle crime and offenders robustly and to ensure the public see us and have confidence we are out there working for them.”

Councillor Kris Hopkins, the Leader of Bradford Council, said: "I am delighted to see a facility like this coming to Windhill, giving residents reassurance and easier access to police and community support officers.

"Often the fear of crime is worse than the reality but knowing that there are officers on their doorstep should make people feel safer. Initiatives like this show the Police, the Housing Trust and the Council are really listening to the communities they serve and taking on board their concerns."
