street games challenge 2006

Over the past two months The Bradford Bulls Foundation and Bradford Community Housing Trust (BCHT) have been working together to deliver a project throughout the West City and East Bradford housing trust areas based on traditional street games.
Young people were recruited from local housing estates and received a training programme to prepare them to organise and run the games. Activities such as skittles and quoits have been intermingled with more modern games, including ones using a parachute, which the children play at school and have shared with the groups.
The project has been aimed at bringing together the young and the old to participate and share games from their childhoods.
It will culminate in a Grand Finale at Grattan Stadium, Odsal on Saturday 19th August between 3p and 6pm, bringing together all the different areas, people and generations to compete in ‘inter-estate’ competitions as well as competitions for individuals in many of the sports.
The afternoon will include games, music and a presentation ceremony for the winners.
BCHT’s Intouch Services has worked closely with the Bradford Bulls to organise the Street Games Challenge. Intouch Services aims to encourage local tenants to get more involved in the work of the housing trust and improve their communities for the benefit of everyone.
Ian Simpson, Executive Director of Bradford West City Housing Trust said: “The Street Games Challenge has been a fabulous success bringing people of all ages together from young children to parents and grandparents.
“Working in partnership with the Bradford Bulls, hundreds of residents have come together to have fun, make new friends and learn more about each other’s community.
“The Grand Finale promises to be a great day out for the family, so why not come along?”
