A new environment team, based at Shipley Community Housing Trust, will transform rundown plots of land in the area.
The six-strong Shipley Environmental Action team will work closely with community and resident groups to identify eyesore sites on local housing estates and neighbourhoods and come up with plans to improve them.
Bids would then be made through local Neighbourhood Action Plans and other funding sources to carry out the work.
Typical improvements could include landscaping work, tree planting, fitting fencing and benches and planting shrubs.
The team will focus on sites in the old Shipley East ward, which includes Windhill, Owlet, Bolton Woods and parts of Wrose and Shipley centre.
It is led by David Atkins and is made up of five young people who have all been recruited locally and are receiving extensive training in environment work and health and safety.
The team is being funded for one year by the European Regional Development Fund, the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and Shipley Community Housing Trust.
Project Manager, David Atkins said: “The team is already looking at schemes to revitalise derelict and rundown sites in Windhill and Wrose.
“The team will work closely with local communities and residents will be encouraged to identify plots they want to see improved.”
James Healy, Head of Operations at Shipley Community Housing Trust said: “Over the next 12 months the team will work with local groups to identify sites and carry out the improvements people want to see.
“Creating more attractive neighbourhoods is one of our key priorities and helps improve peoples’ lives as well as brighten up local areas.
“Hopefully, the work of the project team will lead to the setting up of a community led enterprise which will promote environmental ‘good practice’ to other local groups and deliver more ‘green’ schemes.”
Carol Woodley, a local development worker based at Bolton Woods Community Centre said: “This is an exciting project which will improve eyesore sites and the quality of the local environment. It will also provide valuable employment and training opportunities for the young people in the team.”
