Joyce McCarten, a stalwart of the Holmewood community and active member of Bradford Community Housing Trust, died suddenly at the weekend (Saturday, 14 April).
Mrs McCarten worked tirelessly on behalf of local tenants and residents for many years and in 2002 she was awarded an MBE for her community work.
She was an active member of several local groups including East Bradford Tenants’ and Residents Association, Bradford District Tenants’ Federation, the Holmewood Executive and a local memories group. Joyce also worked on the Holmewood Village Executive as part of the multi-million pound City Challenge regeneration programme in Holmewood, started in the early 1990s.
She was a strong advocate of the work of the Bradford Community Housing Trust (BCHT) Group and served on its Shadow Board at the time of the Stock Transfer from the Council in 2003. Joyce was also a member of the East Bradford Community Housing Trust Board.
As well as her community work, Joyce had a busy family life being a mother of nine children. She also had 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Geraldine Howley, Chief Executive of the BCHT Group said: “Colleagues and friends at the BCHT were extremely saddened to hear the news that Joyce had passed away and our condolences and sympathies go to her family at this time.
“Joyce worked tirelessly to help tenants and local people and was a much respected BCHT board member. She has played a significant part in the regeneration of Holmewood and the neighbouring areas.”
Doris Sunter, Chair of East Bradford Community Housing Trust said: “Joyce was a vigorous and strong minded champion of local people and the communities they lived in.
“I was very saddened to hear of her death. Joyce was a lovely person and will be much missed by everyone at East Bradford.”
Mrs McCarten died suddenly at Leeds General Infirmary. The funeral service will take place at St Christopher’s Church in Holmewood on Tuesday, April 24 at 1.30pm.
