budding young designers plan broomhill garden

20 April 2006

Local school children have been drawing up their design ideas to transform a patch of land at Broomhill in Keighley.

As part of a big local consultation into the plans, Aire-Wharfe Community Housing Trust organised a competition for children at the nearby schools – Ingrow Primary and St Joseph’s RC School.

The design competition formed part of a survey of local residents to find out their views on creating a community garden off Broomhill Avenue and was organised by the Broomhill Action Group and the housing trust.

On Monday, 24 April, Tracy Tough from Aire-Wharfe Community Housing Trust presented prizes to the budding garden designers from both Ingrow and St Joseph’s schools. The overall competition winner is Shane Templeton (10) who attends Ingrow Primary and he received a giant chocolate egg donated by Cleanaway waste management company.

Tracy Tough, Tenant Involvement Officer at Aire-Wharfe Community Housing Trust said: “Many residents are keen to see the green space at Broomhill Avenue turned into a community garden that everyone can enjoy and we have been working with the local action group to gather views and ideas.

“The school children were given the challenge of drawing up their designs for a new garden and the response was fantastic. Their ideas will form part of the next stage – drawing up the design brief.”
